Headline: “Okada’s new ambition: Bringing WWE fans to New Japan”
At NJPW’s Tokyo Dome show, WWE’s Chris Jericho will challenge for the IWGP US Heavyweight title. How does the current top champ feel about the arrival of a WWE superstar?
Their biggest event of the year is getting bigger. Jericho’s appearance has been the subject of much online discussion. Okada says this motivates him, “I’m excited to see what kind of amazing impact he has. Current, younger New Japan fans may not get why it’s a big deal, but the fans in the U.S. are responding like, ‘Oh My God!’. I have to take advantage of his celebrity.”
Following the success of Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles in WWE, New Japan’s brand has gained traction in the US. At the same time, Okada displayed the current New Japan style to older fans, in Tenryu Genichiro’s retirement match. This time he will try to persuade WWE fans.
Okada adds, “Like I did in my match against Mr. Tenryu, I want to make the WWE fans who have never seen New Japan know how exciting the our style is.”
He goes on to add, “I’m not looking to fight Jericho, myself. I’m more excited just to watch his pro-wrestling. I’m looking ahead to even bigger shows, that may come from this.”
