"The Lone Dragon" is a collaboration between brother/sister team, Juan & Juleesa Torres. The story tells the journey of a young masked luchador as he perseveres in the wild and diverse world of pro-wrestling.
It began as an InkTober 2019 challenge, in which we built an original story around a set of word prompts.
The script was written by Juan Torres, a pro-wrestling enthusiast currently living in Japan. Art by Juleesa Torres (@Juleesa on Insta), a gaphic artist and illustrator based in Chicago.
The pro-wrestling world is a wonderful backdrop for celebrating cultural diversity. Mexican Lucha Libre has touched all facets of the sport, from the US to Japan, where it's had an immense impact on style and presentation. There are even burgeoning pro-wrestling scenes sprouting in the most surpirseing of locales (check out the Cholita pro-wrestlers of Bolivia).
Our goal in "The Lone Dragon" was to celebrate the importance of the most famous of Lucha Libre imagery, the masked wrestler. We wanted to convey a spirit of ancestry and empowerment that the pro-wrestling mask represents.
